The Future of Information
Brewster Kahle (inventor of WAIS, Director and Founder of Internet Archive, board member of EFF, member of AAAS) will be one of three panelists discussing the Future of Information at the UC Berkeley School of Information tomorrow (Wednesday, April 26) at 5pm. He will be joined by Mimi Ito, a cultural anthropologist at USC and Keio University, and editor of the book Personal, Portable, Pedestrian: Mobile Phones in Japanese Life; and by Bradley Horowitz, Director of the Technology Development Group of Yahoo! Search & Marketplace.
And since I happen to be in Berkeley this week for a meeting, I will be there, and would love to join some Future Saloners for dinner in Berkeley afterwards. Send me email to have me look for you there, or to get my cell phone number.

Commercializing 100+MPG Hybrids: Challenging Automotive Energy Orthodoxies
Next Future Salon Thursday 20th of April: Commercializing 100+MPG Hybrids
The California Cars Initiative (CalCars.org) is a nonprofit startup of entrepreneurs, engineers and environmentalists combining advocacy and technology development. Founder Felix Kramer (bio see further down) explains plug-in hybrids' benefits for energy security and global warming. He describes current campaigns to promote this solution (and the related campaign for E85 and other biofuels) and the responses from automakers.
A Future Salon has the following structure: 6-7 networking with light refreshments proudly sponsored by SAP. From 7-9+ pm presentation and discussion. SAP Labs North America, Building D, Room Southern Cross, 3410 Hillview Avenue, Palo Alto, CA 94304 [map] As always free and open to the public. Improve your commute by sharing it with a fellow Futurist. Check the Ride Board for opportunities. Please RSVP, so we can get enough food and drinks.
Speaker Bio:
CalCars.org founder Felix Kramer is a communications, marketing, business development and strategy executive. He's made a successful career of promoting innovative ideas, events, products and services relating to energy and technology. He organized this advocacy and technology nonprofit startup devoted to commercializing plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs), gaining national attention for the first "green-tuning" of the popular Toyota Prius hybrid and catalyzing national campaigns to promote flex-fuel PHEVs.
Previously, he was a legislative aide for a member of Congress, in the late 1970s ran a nonprofit energy conservation company, created a trade association for conservation businesses, and directed a three-day citywide solar energy event in NYC. In 1985, he was an early desktop publisher. In 1990, he co-authored Desktop Publishing Success, the first book on the business side of electronic publishing. He sold his DTP business in 1997.
In 1997, he founded eConstructors.com, a marketplace for web development services, then sold the company in 2001. A graduate of Cornell University, he lives in Silicon Valley.
