I just happened to see a poster today for a panel discussion Thursday night at UC Berkeley's Journalism school on "Living With the Genie: On Technology and the Quest for Human Mastery". Future Saloners should recognize a few of the panel members:
- Denise Caruso, founder and executive director of the Hybrid Vigor Institute
- Ray Kurzweil (By videoconference), founder of Kurzweil Technologies, Inc. and author of The Age of Spiritual Machines
- Howard Rheingold, author of The Virtual Community and Smart Mobs
- Richard Rhodes, author of The Making of the Atomic Bomb and other books
- Mark Schapiro, Journalist and Deputy Editorial Director of the Center for Investigative Reporting
A little Googling revealed that it's just the first of a series of panels which continues Friday morning:
- Revisiting Virtual Communities: The Internet's Impact on Society and Politics featuring bloggers Susan Mernit, Markos Moulitsa Zúniga, Craig Newmark, and Mark Pincus.
- Disrupting the News Industry: Media Concentration and Participatory Journalism featuring Neil Chase, Vin Crosbie, Dan Gillmor, and Ken Sands.
All as a lead up to a two-day conference: "China's Digital Future: Advancing The Understanding of China's Information Revolution", featuring a keynote by Lawrence Lessig and including panel appearances by Cindy Cohn and John Gage among many others.
And best of all, it's all free and open to the public, though registration is required for the conference.
Wow, pretty impressive lineup and they took a page from the Future Salon model: It's free :-)
Thanks for digging this up, Mark.
